The North Highland College UHI
North Highland College (NHC) is a partner of UHI Millenium Institute - the University of the Highlands and Islands.
UHI is a unique partnership of fifteen colleges and research institutions across the Highlands and Islands.
NHC and the UHI have a significant investment programme under way at the Thurso campus. Two key projects have been secured which will make a significant contribution to the wider economy:
The Centre for Energy and the Environment (CfEE) has created a £3m state of the art facility which is driving a step-change in the area’s existing research capacity to deliver research and learning of international standard and national relevance, through a flexible, interdisciplinary and integrated community of scholars addressing key challenges of the 21st century.
The centre supports the emerging renewable energy sector by assessing the marine energy resource and promoting understanding of the environmental implications and consequences of developing this resource. This project was funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the Scottish Funding Council and the European Regional Development Fund.
The Engineering Skills Centre which opened in late 2011 is a £7-8m development which sits alongside the CfEE to provide high class training facilities for the immediate need for decommissioning skills and future sustainable development focusing on marine renewable. The project acts as a hub for vocational skills for science and engineering developments across the north. This project was funded by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Scottish Funding Council, European Regional Development Fund and the Highland Council.
