Scrabster cruising to busy season as luxury liner docks

12th May 2011

Scrabster Harbour Trust has just embarked on its busiest cruise season.
Last Tuesday’s arrival of the Quest was the second of 12 luxury ships scheduled to come into port this summer.

The trust continues to make slow but steady progress as it seeks to emulate North cruise destinations such as Invergordon and Oban.
Its promotional efforts were boosted following its recent annual representation at the premier world cruise exhibition in Miami in March.

This year the trade is expected to generate a record throughput of over 5000 passengers.
Trust chairman William Calder said: “Scrabster sees its cruise business as an important and growing activity for the port.  We have now been marketing the cruise lines for six years and the steady growth in vessel and passenger numbers is evidence that these efforts are bearing fruit.”
“The vessels are generally increasing in size and its encouraging to note that our activities will bring almost 6000 visitors into the county this summer.”

Mr Calder said that in addition to the organised shore excursions, many passengers visit Thurso, thereby providing a valuable injection of income to the area.
