This is an exciting time for tourism in Caithness and North Sutherland.
The iconic destination of John O’Groats has been redeveloped by eco-tourism company Natural Retreats, with additional funding provided by Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Local group Venture North was set up in 2012 to focus on promoting the tourist offer in Caithness and Sutherland, with a grass roots collaborative ethos.
The Duke of Rothesay, as the Prince of Wales is known in Scotland, launched the North Highland Initiative (NHI) in August 2005 to promote and develop the economy and to support the rural communities of the North Highlands. The Tourism Project is responsible for the tourism-related activities of the NHI.
The Tourism Project is working in collaboration with tourism businesses, local tourism groups trough the North Highlands and stakeholders in three main areas.
Development of the tourism offering of the North Highlands:
- To develop new products and services to enhance the visitor experience of the region.
- To assist other tourism groups and local communities with product development initiatives.
