Opportunities in nuclear decommissioning.
With over 50 years experience gained from the Dounreay nuclear facility, the Caithness and North Sutherland area has a high level of capability and expertise in the atomic power industry and a highly skilled and innovative engineering supply chain.
The Dounreay nuclear facility has always been a major contributor to the Caithness and Sutherland economy and employed over 2000 staff at its peak. The site is now in an accelerated decommissioning phase, and the NDA has signed a site closure contract with the Cavendish Dounreay Partnership to return the site to an interim end state by around 2032.
With decades of experience in both the operation and decommissioning of a major nuclear facility, Caithness is a centre of nuclear engineering excellence. In recent years, nuclear experts from Caithness have advised on the clean-up of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan and have assisted in the training of Eastern European staff working to decommission the Ignalina nuclear facility in Lithuania.
