Town Centre Strategy
The town centres of Thurso and Wick are crucial to the future success of Caithness and North Sutherland and are the focus of a two year investment plan.
The investment, aimed at redressing the run-down of the Dounreay nuclear site on the retail sector, has three key planks:
- maintaining and developing thriving populations
- developing the tourism potential of the town centres
- attracting inward investment.
Caithness Chamber of Commerce secured the funding for the initiative from Highland LEADER Programme and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
This enabled the recruitment of a Town Centre Development Officer who is tasked with stimulating new opportunities for the retail sector in Wick and Thurso, the main centres of population, and enhancing the tourism product and attractiveness of the area for inward investment.
The findings of this 2007 study informed the drafting of the Town Centre Strategy, a business development strategy that was developed and implemented in conjunction with the Caithness Partnership, the Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership (CNSRP) and the Highland Council.
