Founded in 2012, Venture North are a group of small businesses based in the Caithness and Sutherland area focusing on the development and promotion of the tourism industry within the region, with a grassroots collaborative ethos.
The group, comprising of local tourism-led businesses, aims to encourage potential tourists to the region to go the extra mile and venture north to Caithness and Sutherland.
They seek to promote the area as a region rich in unique leisure opportunities, boasting three magnificent coasts, vast open spaces within the flow country, world famous surf, a wealth of heritage, and the internationally recognised end-to-end point at John O’Groats, to name but a few.
As a cooperative organisation, Venture North brings together tourism businesses from the private and voluntary sector across the region to work together for the benefit of the area.
On December 4 2014, Venture North held its official public launch at Mackays Hotel, Wick, which is owned and managed by the group’s chair, Ellie Lamont. The event was attended by various figures from the Scottish tourism scene, and saw the introduction of their new website, and an app which is being developed to showcase the area’s rich heritage.
The launch also doubled up as a networking event and recruitment drive to seek new members, and featured an impressive cocktail demonstration by Caithness mixologist Simon Collier. The group had waited until 2014 to make their official launch as they then had active projects underway to show their collaborative work.
Venture North received support for the project from several organisations, including the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Caithness Business Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund, and Hub North Scotland, who are responsible for constructing Wick’s two new schools and associated facilities, all wishing to promote activity within the region which will attract new custom and facilitate the growth of the far north economy.
