HHA Silver Darlings
Silver Darlings Close, the first phase of a long-term project aimed at regenerating Wick’s old fishing quarter, has proved so successful for Highland Housing Alliance (HHA) that work has already begun on a second phase.
Lower Pulteneytown, designed by Thomas Telford and in its heyday, the herring capital of Europe, has become the focal point of an exciting redevelopment initiative building a new community in a setting full of period charm and rich in history. HHA acquired one of the old curing yards surrounded by warehouses, and set about transforming it into Silver Darlings Close – a unique development of five thoughtfully restored, contemporary town houses based around an enclosed courtyard with private patios and shared green areas.
In the mid-nineteenth century, Lower Pulteneytown was a thriving area crammed with residential homes, businesses, shops and pubs. Silver Darlings Close is the beginning of a drive to recreate this colourful mix and bring a neglected area springing back to life.
