O’Neill Cold Water Classic
Caithness is a top destination for surfers. One of the sport’s key events, the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series, includes five stunning world-wide destinations: Canada; Tasmania; South Africa; California and Thurso – right here in Caithness.
In April 2010 nearly 130 surfers from around the world attended the Thurso event to compete for the $50,000 prize money. Now in its fifth year the area has earned a reputation for its great surf and warm hospitality. Good solid ground swells and southerly winds combine to make fantastic surf conditions which are attracting the attention of some of the world’s top surfers.
Over the years the event has been supported by the area’s public and private sector partners in recognition of its significance to the area. Businesses have geared up to welcome the influx of surfers, spectators and organisers, whilst the public sector has provided funding and practical support. As an established venue for the Cold Water Classic Series we hope to welcome the event to Thurso every year.
Locally there are a growing number of surfers taking up the sport as a hobby, adding to the exciting range of water sports and activities on offer in the area. With a long and stunning coastline, Caithness and North Sutherland has a great variety to choose from including canoeing / kayaking; diving; fishing and yachting. White water rides on fast and exciting rigid inflatable boats are available from both Wick and John o’Groats and offer a unique opportunity to explore up close the amazing bird colonies perched on the cliffs and abundant sea life including seals and porpoises.
In Caithness and North Sutherland you are never far away from the sea. It’s part of our culture and history. Long, white, sandy beaches, fantastic surf, stunning wide open skies and an abundance of clear fresh air – it’s what make this a very special place to live.
