Situated on the outskirts of the east coast Caithness town, Wick John O’Groats Airport has regular flights to Aberdeen and Edinburgh. Eastern Airways operate twice-daily flights to Aberdeen while Loganair operate daily flights to Edinburgh. Both Aberdeen and Edinburgh airports have onward domestic and international connections. Wick John O’Groats Airport has point-to-point car service provided by Hertz from Autoquip Motors at the nearby industrial estate.
Inverness Airport, approximately 100 miles to the south, also offers a range of UK domestic and international flights.
The railway north of Inverness serves Wick and Thurso, as well as settlements en route, providing passenger trains and a freight service which is primed for significant growth. Abellio Scotrail are the current rail operators.
The A9 trunk road connects the central belt of Scotland to the industrial and population centres of Caithness, ending up at the Scrabster ferry terminal, the route to EMEC and the Orkney Islands. There are good bus links serving the main towns of Wick and Thurso as well as settlements en route. Stagecoach North Scotland operate bus services across the region.
Caithness is well connected by ferry to Orkney and Shetland. There are two ferry routes with scheduled sailings throughout the year for both passengers and freight traffic.
Serco NorthLink Ferries operate from Scrabster to Stromness in Orkney with at least two sailings a day all year round.
Pentland Ferries operate the purpose-built catamaran car ferry, Pentalina from Gills Bay, Caithness to St Margaret’s Hope in Orkney at least three times a day.
A summer only passenger ferry service is operated by John O’Groats Ferries from John O’Groats to Burwick, Orkney with onward bus connections to Kirkwall.
