ICT Connections

High speed broadband internet connections have been a key factor in the ability of Caithness and North Sutherland to compete in the global marketplace.

Caithness and North Sutherland are ideal locations for data centres and businesses like Navertech are exploiting this business opportunity. Bespoke software is also being developed for use in the NHS and decommissioning and waste sectors by Pathuser™ and DecomIT.

In late 2012, Thurso was one of six towns in the Highlands and Islands to benefit from a multi-million pound BT investment in superfast broadband. Businesses and individuals in the area now have access to ADSL2+ broadband, offering download speeds of up to 24Mbps (megabits per second), more than double the fastest speed previously available.

Thurso has also benefited from the rollout of BT’s business Ethernet service, allowing businesses to opt for a range of guaranteed broadband speeds between 1Mbps and 10Gbps (gigabits per second).

Since January 2015, many homes and businesses in Wick and Thurso now have access to superfast broadband following an acceleration of the work to bring it to the area. The fibre based broadband, with speeds of up to 80 mbps, are available to more than 6000 homes and businesses in the two Caithness towns through the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband project.
