Developing the Caithness and Sutherland energy and power sector to create a strong and vibrant economy is the exciting vision of the region.
The area is rich in potential to create electricity, and exploit oil and gas - and has the assets, practical skills and know how to turn this vision into reality.
The outstanding capability in Caithness and North Sutherland is impressive:
- an exceptional track record gained over 50 years of servicing the Dounreay nuclear facility
- a dynamic and innovative engineering supply chain experienced in decommissioning;
- its location beside the UK’s first commercial wave and tidal energy site (Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters)
- and the development of the offshore wind energy sites off the east coast of Caithness (Smith Bank and Beatrice).
The area already has an established presence in the oil and gas sector and these opportunities will be built upon as the West of Shetland oil fields develop.
Two combined heat and power plants are also planned for Georgemas and Forss in Caithness as part of a £300m investment package which has been launched by London-based private equity firm Invicta Capital.
